Happy SAHD: A Documentary About 21st Century Stay At Home Dads

Students Loved It
My students loved the video, as it coincided very well with a book that they were reading for the class. I also thought that it captured the research findings regarding stay-at-home dads really well.

So SAHD, so BAD
At first I was very surprised to discover a documentary on the subject and quite eager to see it. Disappointment came in very fast though.

Quite naive and amateur misrepresentation of what could be an enriching social change, all be it due to malicious causes. The movie gives an impression of an outdated "reality-show" about a bunch of male babysitters, constrained to a single demographic of a suburban dads, with mostly toddlers sampled from just a hand-full of states. These guys are predominantly "accidental" fathers, forced to stay at home due to employment issues (unsurprisingly most laid off from government jobs). Stay at home dad by Choice is not even touched upon.

And what is this "support group" cliche? For recovering bread-winners and home-wife wannabes? Really, do these men have any self-esteem? Just because public education destroyed their imagination does not mean they are constrained by play-dates and going to playground every day. The whole depiction...

Hickey And Boggs

Warning to Review Readers
It should be noted that many of the reviews that Amazon has chosen to post on this page are for previous DVD and VHS releases of this film. The reviews are quite correct, those versions are horrible. This one is excellent, as MODs go, and is certainly going to be the best quality version that you are going to find anywhere. So please ignore the low overall rating as it is being dragged down by these erroneous comments.

Detectives Aren't Heroes Anymore.
A few years after their successful run as partners in espionage on television's "I Spy", Robert Culp and Bill Cosby teamed up for "Hickey & Boggs", a cynical 1972 neo-noir that Culp directed. Far from the adventurous, optimistic duo that Culp and Cosby portrayed in "I Spy", Al Hickey (Bill Cosby) and Frank Boggs (Robert Culp) are private investigators with a dearth of clients and abundance of personal problems. They are hired by a Mr. Rice (Lester Fletcher) to locate a woman named Mary Jane Bower and given a short list of her known acquaintances. The first person on the list is found dead, the bodies pile up, the guns get bigger, and the police lose their patience with the detectives' habit of withholding evidence. But Mary Jane (Carmen) seems to be the key to the loot from a big armored car heist, so Hickey and Boggs keep plugging away, with a $25,000 reward at stake and little left to lose.

"Hickey & Boggs" excels in presenting the private investigator as an emasculated...

Terrific film, really bad DVD
You can tell how bad the DVD is of this film; the website for which I am doing this review does not even list this title on DVD anymore. No question, it is a terrible DVD transfer. I am giving this three stars because it's a great film. The screenplay is by none other than Walter Hill and one of the two leads, Robert Culp, directed--as far as I know, his only feature film directorial effort (he did direct a number of TV show episodes, different shows).

This is a tough as nails noir film with Culp and Bill Cosby as two cynical PIs who get mixed up in a money laundering caper to the tune of 400 grand from a prior bank heist. Also involved are a slick crime boss and his henchmen--one of them is played by a very young Michael Moriarty--and, echoing Chandler, an effeminate lawyer, as well as the cops. The main two of that group are Vincent Gardenia, Sgt. Papadakis, and another early appearance, this time by James Woods at Lt. Wyatt.

But the two title characters...

George Bush: The 9/11 Interview

Phenomenal movie!
This DVD gives us an insight as to one of the many challenges that a President encounters while in office. I was inspired and in awe by the grace in which President Bush handled this attack! Thank you W!

A Presidential Perspective of 9/11
I first learned of this video in a listing of upcoming TV specials in a National Geographic magazine that was designed to promote its cable television network. Within the first ten minutes of watching the show on television, I knew that I just HAD to buy the DVD for my library. I make no secret of my high degree of respect and admiration for President George W. Bush, and this show only increased both. For the first time in the ten years since the horrific events of that day, I saw an in-depth interview with President Bush that gave him plenty of time to share his feelings beyond, as another reviewer said, the typical soundbite.

This production is brutally candid, and we see a range of human emotions from the President, including anger, frustration, fear, impatience. He shares in an honest and vulnerable approach the stresses of being the Commander-in-Chief when we've come under attack as a country. President Bush admits some faults in hindsight, but this video, much...

A great documentary on George Bush and his involvement in post 9/11
This is one of the best documentaries I have seen showing the thought processes, and reasoning from the sitting President during an emotional decisive time in their career.
It does not matter what your personal opinions of George Bush are, this shows what happened from his perspective during 9/11. What shaped his policies, and how he led the United States through this period.
Personally I found his honesty and forthright talking refreshing, compared to what you normally see during sound bites on the evening news.
A must if you are interested in history, whether you a Bush fan or not.

Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes

Great Program!!!
I have always had a passion for history, particularly in Great Lakes maritime history and the storms that have claimed many a vessel and sailor. National Geographic Channel is known for producing quality documentaries, including those relating to marine archaeology, so I had high hopes for this show. After receiving and watching Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes, I can say I am honestly jealous that I was not a part of the expedition team that discovered both these shipwrecks.

Jealousy aside, this program tells an amazing story, bringing everything together with one woman's story, miraculously surviving one storm that claimed her vessel's tow-ship , yet meeting her tragic demise years later in an eerily similar gale. Even though the woman, Frankie Waters, died over one-hundred years ago, her account of the 1898 storm, along with the discovery of her remains in the 1960s, led to the discovery of both the L.R. Doty and the Olive Jeanette. Two long-lost and nearly forgotten...

Beware---Only plays on Windows 7
I returned the first copy of this title because it would not play on my DVD nor on my computer. Amazon sent a replacement. The replacement did not play either. It turns out that it only plays on a Windows 7 operating system--which we only have on our newest computer---I would have liked to watch this on our TV while comfortably lying on the sofa rather watching on a monitor while seated on a desk chair in my husbands office. I'm sure the film is great but it'll probably be a long time before I'll sit at a desk to watch it.

Negima!? The Complete Series S.A.V.E.

Aaaaaaand take two!
Technically, there's already been an anime series -- "Negima" -- about preteen wizard/schoolteacher Negi Springfield.

But apparently that isn't stopping them from creating another parallel series, rebooting and revamping Ken Akamatsu's bestselling manga into the visually lush, fantastical "Negima!?" (see, the question and exclaimation mark mean it's a different show!). And this series is a vastly different creation -- while it's rarely faithful to the original manga's storylines, it's still a solid fantasy story sprinkled with some fun comic relief. And chupacabras.

Negi has been assigned to a vast all-girls Mahora Academy in Japan -- but things start going wrong before he even starts. Half-asleep student Asuna witnesses a small magical display, and a vampire is attacking students. A vampire who is also his student.

Even worse, the vampire Evangeline and her robotic partner Chachamaru are targeting Negi, since the boy is her only ticket out of a curse...

Negima--sort of
After Studio XEBEC adapted the first bit of Ken Akamatsu's popular "Negima" manga, many fans were left wanting more. The first adaptation was for the most part faithful to the manga but took a drastic turn at the very end (which I will not spoil here). Though it was all in all a solid adaptation it left fans divided and desiring some more closure. Then the news broke that Studio Shaft would be taking on the franchise, starting with the spring and summer ova's that adapted (kind of?) a little bit more of the manga. Fans waited in anticipation for the next stage of the adaptation, hopefully filling in what got left out.
They did not get it.
What they did get, though, was this delightful little series which simultaneously confuses the hell out of me and makes me chuckle at its oddities.
After adapting the Evangeline vampire arc the story quickly shifts into something original, not following the manga at all. The story here is interesting, but not as good as the story in...

When they say re-imagined, they mean it. But this is definitely the superior anime.
First of all, I love the Negima manga series. The U.S. release is now up to volume 20 and it has been a fantastic ride the whole way through. The first anime series was ok. For the most part it followed the stories laid out in the first few volumes of the manga pretty accurately. Then for the final few episodes they created original material to wrap up the series. Overall, it was fun to see a great manga series in animated form with voices and music, but they really only scratched the surface.

This second Negima anime series starts over and pretty much tells its own story. Some might complain because they want to see the Manga better represented, but I see no need for this. I can enjoy the anime series as an alternate storyline, and this one is just all around fun. The animation is fantastic and the characters are well represented. Since it's a new story I get the same sense of wondering what will happen next that I do when reading the manga.

One bit of...

Inspector Morse Set Ten: Twilight of the Gods

Dated
As I do enjoy both Lewis and Endeavour so much, I thought I'd go back and pick up what I missed in the long-running series, "Morse". I wouldn't object to the series being technologically dated, not to mention the hairstyles, but the way a gay man's character was written and acted was so wildly off, and so stereotypically insulting, that I gave it up. I happen to be a 50-something straight woman, so no personal axe to grind here. I just know lots of real people who are gay, and I couldn't watch the foolish characterization on Morse. The reason I didn't go on to watch further episodes is that I felt the tone was set: so out of it. I do recommend: Sherlock (absolutely compelling actors, and super direction and editing). Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (deliciously stylish and witty, with the proverbial heart of gold), The Hour (very complex and demanding, well worth your effort), in addition to those mentioned above. Morse R.I.P.

Inspector Morse is Always a Hit - What a Great Series!!
This is Set Ten of eleven "Inspector Morse" Sets. Each Set has three episodes/discs. Don't confuse these eleven "Sets" with the previously issued (but still available) "Collection Sets". Each of the six "Collection Sets" cost more, as each has more episodes/discs than these Sets.

Set Ten has three episodes. The first episode originally aired as the last episode in the BBC Series 7. (The BBC uses "series" instead of "seasons".) The last two episodes in this DVD Set Ten aired in the same order, as the first two, of five total, "Inspector Morse" Annual Specials.
Episodes:
Twilight of the Gods - originally aired January 1993
The Way Through the Woods - aired November 1995
The Daughters of Cain - aired November 1996

TWILIGHT OF THE GODS:
Andrew Baydon, successful entrepreneur, wants to donate a huge new building to the college. He's receiving an honorary degree, but he's not in a good mood. He's furious over some uncomplimentary newspaper...

Life's Vissitudes
After immensely enjoying the Complete Inspector Lewis, you may want to explore the beginning, with Inspector Morse. Apparently, a complete boxed collection of Morse had poor quality transfers and sound, and missing footage. This recent release of DVDs precludes that, though you have to slog through purchasing Sets 1 thru 11 separately. Even so, the complete price is less for these more recent, upgraded disks, even though you don't get the wooden box featured in the complete collection.

The first story in this 3-Disk collection is the weakest, though opera fans may rejoice. "Twilight of the Gods" stumbles with a miscasting of the superlative Robert Hardy (Harry Potter, All Creatures Great and Small, etc.). A very young Rachel Weisz is excellent, given the small amount of material she has to work with. Issues of class and culture are dealt with, though ultimately, talent should out, whatever pedestal the...

Awesome show. The third season is the best in my opinion. If you're a fan of FMP, you should definitely complete your collection with this third season set. Also, the service was really great. I accidentally ordered two, and they took the opened accidental set back, no questions or problems.

Things got serious in this one
Not what I expected from Full Metal Panic.
Things get pretty serious in here; you still have the laughs here and there, but it gets very suspenseful.

This legendary concert performance takes place at Moscow's Hall of the Luzhniki Arena. Baskov is accompanied by a full orchestra and plays to an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 10,000 people. Taped with 24 HD cameras, this is Russia's most elaborate and expensive performance ever recorded for international television. He performs classic pieces from "Tosca", "La Boheme", "Werther", "Turandot" and other favorites such as "Be My Love", "Granada" and "Back to Sorrento". Baskov is joined by world-renowned soprano, Caballe Montserrat, and her daughter Marti, for several rousing duets. Considered Russia's most popular tenor, Nicolai Baskov has been charming audiences throughout Europe and is planning his first American tour in early 2012.

Episodes:
The Sins of the Fathers
Driven to Distraction
Masonic Mysteries

THE SINS OF THE FATHERS:
A man finishes typing a letter in his office. He scrunches up the carbon paper, throwing it away, and then burns another letter in an ashtray. As he leaves the office, he is attacked from behind. The next we see of him, it's his dead body, found the next day by a worker. Lewis rushes into Morse's office exclaiming, "You'll never believe this,...

Awash in Ale and Mystery
This particular set of three mysteries features even more ale than usual, as an Oxfordshire brewery is the location for dark impulses. By now, you may want to try Morse's "favourite" food: Samuel Smith's ales. Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout is fine indeed, as is the rare, oak-aged Samuel Smith's Yorkshire Stingo (released every other year). Enjoy your vicarious, bubbly travels to England!

The Sins of the Fathers: Inspector Morse investigates foul play at a family-run brewery called "Radford Brewery." Traditional, small business practices are challenged by a takeover bid by a huge multinational company. The murderer finds a terrible use for a beer vat. And by imbibing Samuel Smith's ales with Inspector Morse, we learned a new word: flocculent. A fine word, worthy of Morse's crossword puzzles.

Driven to Distraction: How could anyone convince Morse he needs to sell his precious Mark II Jaguar? Devious tendrils of plot unfold as lovely young women are murdered, all...

Killer Eye 2: Halloween Haunt (2011) [HD]

Save your money!
Incoherent movie. No special effects. Rehash old script from first Killer Eye movie. Gratuitous topless nudity and really stupid and unnecessary.

hypnosis and nudity
It was a great movies I wish it took the brunette all of her clothers off on part of the movie.
When it strip her down to the bra and panty it should have strip her completely nude it is learning about women and female isn't
It would be more intersted if the ending with the two women was some how transporter to the 8 deminion for more study and then totally disappear.
I give all together this movie excellent as it was and hope to a 5 star with full nudity of women.

Story...yeah...
Talk about a thirty minute "movie" that they stretched to an hour ten. This is how I would define this movie: so/so acting, boobies, twenty minutes of watching clips from the previous movie, women slowly get killed somehow (cue excessive gore), one of them gets resurrected as an evil version of itself somehow, vaguely female empowering moment when they beat the "monster." This is an all chick flick, so no guy actor to create a forced romance between one character and the other, could have been a good thing.

That being said at least the characters were fun if not outright silly, and everyone involved kind of seemed privy to just how silly of a concept this movie is. They played up all the typical B movie cliches. The actors and director seemed to be having fun with it even if they probably threw the script together overnight. It was mildly enjoyable. I'd say rent it, but don't buy it.

Eclipse Series 29: Aki Kaurismaki's Leningrad Cowboys

Great films but disappointing picture quality
I have these in the Finnish language releases. They are terrific cult films and hilarious to watch. Unfortunately the Criterion transfers are below par, the picture is soft and the colors weak. The Finnish PAL releases are noticably better. Only in the subtitles do Criterion excell. They offer the choice of full subtitles whereas the Finns only subtitle the Finnish language parts. As visitors to Finland will know the Finnish accent is a bit different and the Criterion titles do help.

Long Story Short Crterion Never Fails!
i bought this on a spur of the moment 50% sale, not a big suprise that the prestigious criterion picked out a very enjoyable finish cult classic. Anyone who appreciates good films will like these odd quirky films.

FOR "GO AMERICA" FILM: A mixed bag at best but certainly an interesting Finnish/Russian antidote to The Blues Brothers
"Above all, a very muted, subdued, and dry experience in its own right but stylistically intriguing as a whole. After viewing Kaurismaki's Le Havre, his most recent cinematic effort, Leningrad Cowboys, along with Ariel and Juha, is considered one of his most notable works during his career. First off, the film deals with a Russian folk music band touring the United States after losing a contract and fan-base in their home country.

The film, despite its potential snafus to certain audiences, is neither pro-Communist nor spoken in Russian or Finnish (given the director's homeland) with English subtitles but in seldom-used, broken English for the most part with some Mexican Spanish. Aside from that, the stylistic factor is notified by its distant humour and dialogue where much of the comedy and irony comes from the small things they say and the mildly zany things (particularly tame material for a PG-13 film) they do like leave a member of their band to be in a bed of ice with...

The Bandits Of Corsica

The Return of the Corsican Brothers
The Bandits of Corsica, 1953 film

"The Corsican Brothers" was a famous novel from the 19th century. This novel was adapted to a movie in 1941 with a big budget and major actors. Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean that is ruled by France and best known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. This story takes place in the early 19th century during the monarchy. This is a sequel with a lower budget and actors who would become better known in the future. This story tells about the oppression of the people by an aristocratic government of big landowners, and the personal conflicts of some people. Will the evil government be thwarted so the good people will win? Yes, if the movie is to be a success.

The outdoor scenes remind me of the many western movies produced in the 1930s and early 1940s. This is like a western with swords instead of revolvers, and different costumes. The special effects are using an actor to play twin brothers (who had a special bond at...

Bandits of Corsica
I am a very great fan of Lee Van Cleef. Eventhough he has a secondary role in this movie, his part is one of his more out-of-the-ordinary roles. He trades a six shooter for a sword and does magnificently with it. Not to mention that he is absolutely sexy in uniform.
If you really love LVC you will love this one.

Casper the Friendly Ghost: The Complete Collection (1945-1963)

Excellent Casper DVD Set
So I received my advanced copy of the "Casper" DVD that I did commentaries and interviews for. Overall, I give the set high marks with some minor quibbles that I had no control over.

On the plus side, the set looks good. There are two slimline case clamshells; one featuring the two theatrical discs and the third disc in its own case features all of the "New Casper Cartoon Show" episodes.

The 20-page full-color booklet looks fantastic and of course, it was written by yours truly, so it is crammed with tons of information including where every episode appears in comic books, when applicable.

The first three Casper cartoons that are now in the public domain are actually featured as bonus features of disc one. There are 10 commentaries strewn throughout. All feature me with three of them with Edmee Reit (widow of Sy), three of them with Bradley Bolke and three of them with Alison Arngrim (daughter of Norma MacMillan).

I first saw the 15+ minute...

Still great after all these years!
I was a big fan of Casper growing up and was highly anticipating this release, though I did so with trepidation as it seems there are some child-hood favorites that I re-visited as an adult that lost their magic. Luckily, this was not the case with Casper.

The artwork is absolutely beautiful in the early to mid 50s cartoons and though Casper could be cheesy at times, the cartoons still retain their warmth and happiness. It was fun to see the New Casper Cartoon openings which I remembered from my childhood. I'm really glad the booklet was included chock full of great Casper trivia and history.

I showed my five-year old nephew some of the cartoons and it seems that Casper has found a new fan!

Definitely recommend this to anyone of any age!

Everything I hoped it would be.
I have been looking for all 26 episodes from the 1963 "Casper new cartoon show" for a good 10 years. I love that all 26 are on one dvd. Thank you so much for releasing this!

The Four Feathers (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

A Rousing British Adventure Comes To Criterion--A Sweeping And Beautiful Epic
To the modern eye, certain elements and attitudes on exhibit in Zoltan Korda's 1939 adaptation of "The Four Feathers" may appear dated. That's to be expected, really, and shouldn't discourage any real movie lover from appreciating this British epic of unlikely heroism. Once you get past a rather heavy handed beginning--there is much pointed discussion about what makes a man, bravery versus cowardice, and the supreme glory of British imperialism--a terrifically outlandish, but spectacularly entertaining, adventure starts to unfold. With sweeping desert vistas, gorgeous British estates, spectacular battle footage, and impressive location shooting--this is really a film begging for a Criterion restoration as the previous DVD presentations were relatively underwhelming. The film boasts Oscar nominated cinematography, and it deserves to be appreciated and admired for the spectacle that it truly is!

The story revolves around Harry Faversham (John Clements), a British officer...

A first rate, rip-roaring adventure story
Thank god I gave this movie another chance! A few years ago I watched this film on a local public television station. The print they showed, however, was old and worn, with hundreds of lines and specks marring every scene. Also, the color was so badly faded that it almost looked like it was filmmed in black and white.

But reviewing the film on a newly restored and enhanced print was nothing short of a revelation. It was frequently gorgeous to look at, and the high quality of the print allowed me to focus on the story. Many of the scenes were filmmed on location in the Middle East, which greatly added to the appeal of the movie (in American epics of the thirties, even the Crimea and India ended up looking like the Mojave Desert for obvious reasons--reminds me of the funny scene in the second Austin Powers movie, where Austin casually remarks while driving down a road that is clearly on the California coast, "Isn't it amazing how much the coast of England looks like...

RULE BRITANNIA
There are films that are classics since the day they are released. This film is one of those. Zoltan Korda shows his elegance and skills presenting us a typical adventure.

Based on the novel by A. W. E Mason, it is the story of young Harry Faversahn born and raised to follow the military life like all his ancestors. Pity that his father is an obssesed of the glories of the Empire, and that his friends bored the child telling stories about battles, slaughters and Baklava (the scene with C. Aubrey Smith explaining the battle with a pineaple and some walnuts is one of the best in the story of cinema).

But Harry is a good boy so he joins the army, trains all day and even has time to conquer beautiful Ethne. With that Harry decides to leave the army, but good things do not last forever, so in the evening of his engagement party his regiment is call to arms. To Egypt to fight against the wicked Egyptian rebels. But Harry refuses and so his former best friends send...

Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1: Season One

Brilliant absurdist comedy
Clark Douglas, DVD Verdict --If you dug Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you'll be just as satisfied by Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1.

As for the actual episodes included here: First up, you have the seven remaining unreleased episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, though they are included on the disc labeled "AUPS1 S1." Meanwhile, the sparkly, brand-new Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 episodes are included on the disc labeled "ATHF FV" (the "FV" standing for Final Volume). I suppose this is meant to be a little joke about the fact that the two shows are basically indistinguishable. Or a printing error. Either way, insert Nelson-style "haw-haw!" here.

The actual tales included are the usual mix of brilliant absurdist comedy (I particularly love the story about the slovenly Carl actually being a spy who has been doing surveillance work on the gang for nine years), random oddities (Frylock attempting to bring Carl to Jesus by introducing Carl to Jesus' gay hairdresser?), and undercooked...

IT'S THE SAME SHOW!
The name change and opening title change and minor changes in-show are almost entirely superficial; this is basically the same show as the last few years of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The format is definitely much different from early ATHF, but that's just how the show creators have gone with the stories. And I still find it hilarious and love it.

Witty new comeback for Hunger squad
Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 is season 8 of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Not a new show, just a new name. Yeah, it's set in Seattle, but the setting is exactly the same. Hilarious! I've been a huge fan of this show since about 2003, and have followed it heavily throughout its run, and sure, this new season isn't going to gain any fans, in fact, it has already lost some longtime ones, but only because of the daring title change. Also, don't let the "SEASON 1" fool you on here, it's going to be Aqua Something You Know Whatever next season! Disc one has all of the AUPS1 episodes, and disc two rounds out the remainding ATHF episodes not yet released on DVD. No, Amazon didn't screw up, this is disc two. Since no one has done so yet, I will post the episodes and special features.

Thomas & Friends: Merry Christmas Thomas [HD]

Christmas with trains!
In our house its not Christmas, without trains and what better way to start off the holiday season than with a Christmas Thomas & Friends DVD! I have a feeling too that we will be watching this DVD long past Christmas too. It is a cute DVD with just enough episodes to keep my boys attention and all the episodes feature wholesome lessons of course! The episodes feature snow, a snowman, Christmas trees, presents, lights and basically got my boys very excited about Christmas!

Merry Christmas commercials
You know how this is: your kids bug you to put in a DVD for them. You put in the DVD and wait until the copyright warning is over, and the various logos of producers and distributors finished, before you can finally hit Play. Most Thomas DVDs add more annoying "buy more Thomas DVD" trailers.

Ok - I can just about bear this, but this DVD just puts it over the top. The DVD starts with a barrage of commercials for various pink plastic toys - which never wants to end. Why am I exactly paying for this DVD? To have the pleasure to watch commercials?

And not just that: after you started the DVD for the kids, you usually go about your thing and come back when your kids report the DVD over. At the end of the Thomas video part, this DVD keeps on repeating commercials - in an endless loop.

If you like watching commercials, and you are willing to pay for this privilege, this is the right product for you. If you think that the young minds of your kids are too...

great movie i loved it
it was so educational for my little ones. i am so happy my kids like this movie. they watch it all the time

A Better Life [HD]

A Tale of Compassion
"A Better Life" is a poignant story about the struggle of an honest, profoundly decent man to survive as an illegal alien in LA. Utterly devoid of political posturing and moralizing, the film deals instead with the universal human yearning for security, stability, and at least some degree of happiness in one's life.

Completely devoted to his teenage son Luis (José Julián), Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir) maintains his humanity and dignity in the face of greed, deception, and cruelty. The inescapable precariousness of his situation underscores the futility of Carlos' efforts to better the life of his son as well as to improve his own condition. The dream of owning a business, moving to a better neighborhood, and giving his son a good education remains just that - a dream. In the end, an illegal, Carlos submits himself to the law and accepts its harsh verdict of deportation only to attempt to cross the border again, this time to reunite with his son...

Dramatic and touching.
An illegal immigrant is raising his son in California, working as a day laborer. He buys a work truck, which is stolen from him. His dream of a better life for him and his boy are in danger unless he can get the truck back. This is a film that portrays a realistic view of life for people living in the U. S. without legal status and the pitfalls of living in a place where you have no legal rights. There is no preachy liberal immigrant-rights content here, but just a dramatic example of what many in this country experience on a daily basis. There is solid acting throughout, as this one is very well-done, and hopefully will find an audience.

Examining Lives - A Father and Son Love Story
A BETTER LIFE is one of the more understated films to come out of Hollywood, a film that has the courage to tell a story that is so politically charged - the immigration debate - that releasing it now is on the one hand asking for negative responses and on the other hand offers to the public the real truths behind our quandary about immigration. This country consists of immigrants - all of us - no matter how far back we have to trace our ancestry: the only people who did not begin their family history as immigrants from every country in the world and the Native Americans, and look how we are treating them! If this film does nothing else than plead the case of human understanding it will have accomplished more than legions of films that touch this subject too lightly.

Carlos Galindo (Demián Bichir, in an extraordinarily fine performance) crossed the border into the US with his new wife, looking for a way to improve his life. Upon arriving his wife gave birth to...

Princess Tutu Complete Collection

Wonderful Series... with great bonuses!
I give lots of praise to this series, but I thought I'd clarify a few things for people interested in this set. There is another, more expensive set on amazon. This set is the recent re-release with a different package design. Unlike most ADV releases, this box set contains the original discs, which are still loaded with bonus features, making this a great buy. My one gripe is that the DVDs are all stacked, instead of being in individual holders, but I still consider this official release a great buy.

Deserves WAY more than 5 stars....
First off, before I review this, I have to say, Princess Tutu is my FAVORITE anime. Ever. And I've seen a lot. It's fantastic, and I think everyone should see it.

I'm not sure how to summarize the story. It's very complex and engaging. I have to mention first, this anime is very much like a fairy tale. (in fact it uses a lot of Germanic legend and folklore as inspiration) It focuses on a girl, who is really a duck, named Duck, who is in love with a Prince without a heart. She is given a pendant by a man named Drosselmeyer, who is the man pulling the strings behind the whole story. The pendant allows her to take the form of a human girl. This pendant also allows her to turn into Princess Tutu. While Duck is Princess Tutu, she can search for and retrieve shards of the Prince's heart. Throughout the series, Duck must face different obstacles, such a Knight whose role in the story is ambiguous at first, (is he friend or foe?) another Princess who claims the Prince is hers, and...

Virtually FLAWLESS!!!!!!!
This is a great series and yes it does have a goofy kid like name to it. But dont let that fool you. This series is a total HIDDEN GEM. I love anime but i dont track how well a series does in DVD sales. I believe the individual DVDs are discontinued. But get this box set which contains seasons 1 & 2 and for the current sale price its almost 1.00 per episode. The story is about a girl name Duck who is actually a DUCK but turns into a girl when a story teller grants her a wish. She utilizes her time as a girl drooling over the cutest guy at school but the boy has a SECRET. Along with being able to be a girl she can transform into Princess Tutu where she must help save the prince & get back the shards to his scattered heart. This series has it all and the best thing is, it has MYSTERY which kept my attention. Alot of these new anime titles lately really dont have an ENGAGING element to keep me attracted. Princess TuTu kept me glued to the screen the WHOLE TIME. Its also directed by the...

V: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray]

Coming Into It's Own
The original "V" mini-series and "V: The Final Battle" were ground breaking, riveting dramas that were essentially a play on the history of the Nazi party and it's rise to power. The original "V" was one of the most watched mini-series of the 1980's and won international acclaim for it's powerful story and strong performances. The 1980's TV series spin-off that followed did not come even remotely close to living up to either mini-series. The show started with an interesting idea but was destroyed by poor writing, low budgets and uninspired direction and was inevitably cancelled. Toward the end, the only thing the original TV series had going for it was the performance of the always exceptional Jane Badler as evil lizard overlord, Diana.

Season 1 of "V", the remake, updated the original 1980's mini-series for a new century while maintaining the promise of the original by adapting the story to fit into a world more concerned with international terrorism than...

Big Improvement *Spoilers*
V Season 2 is a giant improvement over the first season. The season premiere picks up where the first season finale left off...the red sky. We start to learn a lot more about the V's this season including exactly what they look like under their human skin. This season also marks the return of Jane Badler from the original as Diana. She plays the mother of Anna and the scenes between them are awesome. Mark Salling from the original V also appears in the finale, leaving his role open for season 3. The show is a lot more interesting this season with betrayals, shocking deaths, twists, new characters and more. If you thought the first season was okay, you are sure to like this season.

Awsume series
This is a wonderful series. The writers and the producers are beyond reproach with putting this series together. the actors are well beyond profetionalism and really bring you into the story. the series has not been canceled as of yet but only delayed acording to ABC. There arent very many SCI FI action dramas out there and right now ABC basicly has a huge fan base to pool from. if they actually cancel this show it would set ABC back with all the other bland progaming the other networks have at the moment.

I hope this series goes on for many more seasons and my hats off to all the wonderful hard working men and women who make V the Series what it is.

Edit:7/18/2011 Now that the show is officially canceled i absolutely refuse to support ABC nor will i watch any of their programming. The executives appear too be mindless bafoons that would not know good programming if it hit them in there butts. mabie they should run as politicians .... they will fit in with all...

Milton Rogovin: The Rich Have Their Own Photographers

A great discovery.
I knew nothing about the work of this wonderful photographer before i bought the DV. I am so glad i took the chance and got to see this mans amazing work. A real treat for those of us who love street photography and portraiture

Milton Rogovin: A National Treasure
Imagine being black listed by Sen. McCarthy, your means of livelihood nearly destroyed and then spending the next 50 years documenting the dignity of those who work in steel mills, mines and the working poor in general. Several of Milton's books are currently available. I recommend this one for the best overview of his considerable body of work.

A Most Moving Portrait, Powerful, Must See
This movie is a well crafted biography and exploration of the life of an acclaimed photographer. The director had unlimited access to the Rogovins, more than everyone else, and the footage is priceless. The soundtrack is award winning too.

Initial D: First Stage S.A.V.E.

Funimation NAILED IT!!
Back in the mid-2000s, Initial D was already an established property that many anime fans and car enthusiasts loved (including myself). With that much popularity circulating, it was only a matter of time before the US localized it and presented it to America.

So... US anime/manga distributor Tokyopop licensed the distribution rights to the Initial D anime as well as the manga it was based on.

In their attempt at creating an experience that could appeal to a wider audience, Toykopop did things that are totally unacceptable in today's US anime market.

* Names were changed/altered
* The original true-to-life car sounds were replaced with generic sound effects
* The Super Eurobeat soundtrack (a trait the series had become known for) was removed in favor of generic rap/rock music
* The computer-generated race sequences were given added "special effects" (this was the most questionable edit they made and still baffles me)
* A simplified...

Finally!
Finally! An acceptable version on Initial D for our shores. I had the tokyopop version and refused to watch it in english, as it was that bad. Picked this up and the quality of every piece seems better.

If you buy this, but the other stages at the same time, as you will want them. Now i no longer need to wathc my bootleg fansubs and can watch somehting with GOOD subtitles and GOOD quality.

GREAT Anime for Car enthuiasts
Very interesting anime with enough details to satisfy gear heads and in nice CGI graphics (i believe it was) for the time. Awesome story as well I'd say if they don't have all the season (1-4 currently) on Blu-ray which is what i was looking for pick up one through four on DVD.

Secrets of Christianity

"[Constantine] worshipped the Sun's only begotten son: himself." -Simcha Jacobovici
SECRETS OF CHRISTIANITY (2011 for The History Channel, 270 minutes total) is a spectacular documetary series I must defend - not just because it is brilliant and my quasi-colleague Simcha Jacobovici is responsible - but because it is truly a work of depth and a documentary worth its salt.

In short, this series by investigative journalist/documentarist Simcha Jacobovici addresses some issues in the history of Christianity. As I have stated in my review of Simcha's work on The Lost Tomb of Jesus and other related projects, I am concerned about his eagerness to hitch his wagon to the New Testament. I am concerned that he and 'partner in crime', the great Professor James Tabor of North Carolina, want the early Christian community to have been 100% Jewish ... which is an asinine proposition.

Unless "christian" meant something else in the past.

Simcha is here to peel back the layers of...

This Movie of The Secrets of Chrisitanity Is a Farce
It seems to me the author knows more about the Greek god "Helios" and the Roman god "Sol" (the personification of the physical earthly sun. These mythological beliefs were evident in Jesus' day. To be a "christian" means nothing more than inviting the living Christ Jesus into a person's heart as Lord, having fellowship with him, loving him and living according to His will and teachings. If a person doesn't receive this, then I question this DVD on saying it has "the secret of christianity." The physical sun will one day die, but the everlasting God who created the sun will never die. There were great influential scholars and religious leaders in Jesus time who were eye witnesses of the miracles that were performed through this man and they could not deny their existence. People kept the bible from being printed because they did not want the people to learn how to think for themselves and be free.

Is this a secret for most Christians it is
I've studied the Bible for a long time I bought this for selling Christianity Constantine store with most Christians would understand what Constantine did to Christianity they would look deeper into the Bible to find out what true Christianity's I recommend this DVD set

Bonanza: The Official Second Season, Vol. 2

Would have been 5 stars but...
Lovers of the original Bonanza will like these episodes. The video is good, the audio is loud & clear, you don't have to turn the volume up like other dvd's but....

That wonderful theme music is missing both at the beginning & at the end - that cost this one star

BUT EVEN WORSE !!! ... (and costing another star)

The Platinum Video people must think it's OK to put their name and a logo in the bottom right of the screen. I DON'T !!!

I hate it on broadcast & cable TV and I wouldn't have bought this if I'd known about the logo.

Platinum Video in on my "no buy list" because of that logo policy.

Worth Waiting For!
This is classic BONANZA the way it was meant to be -- in a wonderful, new collection well worth waiting for after years of bootleg, unauthorized sets of poorly packaged, inferior quality transfers, lacking the original music and sold in bargain basement bins. The picture and sound quality here is excellent. Every episode starts with the iconic NBC Peacock and contains the legendary original theme song (one of the greatest of all time) by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. David Rose's wonderful music, specially composed for each episode, is intact. To be able to see scenes cut out of TV Land broadcasts is so gratifying! And the extras! Pages and pages of magnificent photos I've never seen before (many in color), including on the set, off the set, cast relaxing "at home," making personal appearances . . . audio commentary on some episodes by guest stars (you should hear what Julie Adams recalls about Dan Blocker in "The Courtship" and what Stella Stevens says about working with Michael...

Thank God; it's about time!
I was so afraid this would never come out! Thank God it's coming! I don't even have to see it to know it is going to be great. The first-season DVDs were wonderful... complete un-cut episodes, clear color and film quality, and the CORRECT ORIGINAL MUSIC, not to mention you can be sure you get EVERY episode, unlike all that I dislike with the "other" Bonanza DVD collections out there. I would be thrilled with just the episodes themselves, but the special features are icing on the cake. My mother's favorite from the first-season set are the photo galleries. She was a Bonanza fan when the show first aired and I have now fallen in love with the show. Please, please, please, please, release the official DVDs for all the other seasons, too! Women of the younger generation need more Pernell Roberts.

Kuroneko (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Let This 'Black Cat' Cross Your Path...
[KURONEKO aka BLACK CAT - (1968) - Directed by Kaneto Shindo - Widescreen Presentation] From the director of 'Onibaba' and 'The Island', this genuinely creepy, atmospheric (and somewhat obscure) classic finally gets a stateside release; even more blessed are we that it's getting the Criterion treatment. Riding the critical wave after 'Onibaba' was released, Kaneto Shindo, along with Kiyomi Kuroda, whose award-winning cinematography sets the tone for this film, brilliantly delivers the chills with an underlying tragic story of lost love and revenge, and its Chiaroscuro/Noir visuals are nothing short of breathtaking.

In feudal Japan, a warring group of marauding Samurai seeking food emerge from the dense forest when they come across a house that should have what they require. Upon entering the house, they find it indeed has what they want and a whole lot more...it has women as well. The inhabitants, an elderly woman and her young daughter-in-law are both subjected to...

Rare & Welcome
This is a film I have only seen on a crappy foreign bootleg copy --the picture was washed out and even muddy in patches and the sound was boxy, but the shortcomings of the poor transfer (from who knows what sources) were soon forgotten as I was immersed in the masterful storytelling and lovely atmospheric world of the filmmakers. This is a classic, old-school, Japanese ghost story, told at a measured pace and more creepy than shocking (which means it may not hold the attention of restless viewers who demand a rock'em-sock'em, CGI rollercoaster ride, and OMG --it's in black & white!), but it's just my cup of tea. I look forward to seeing this film decently presented, and you can always count on Criterion to get the job done.

Black Cat
I was blown away by this film.

I have really enjoyed films by Akira Kurosawa and wanted to branch out to other Japanese Director's work.

I bought this on a whim.

Its a haunting story that is tragic and romantic. Its also very sexy in its own way.

if you want to take chance and watch something startling and unique please give this film try.

The Child's Eye [HD]

Bizarre
I've seen a lot of Asian horror films, but this has got to be the weirdest movie I've ever seen in my life. About halfway through the movie I began to get confused. My confusion only got worse from there. It did not stop me from watching the entire movie, though. I'm not really sure how certain things got to be how they are in the film, and would have liked an explanation, but no big deal. It's not a fantastic movie; but if you've got time to kill and want to see something a little different, I'd recommend watching it.

Strong visuals carry the film far too much
Paul Pritchard, DVD Verdict --The Child's Eye sees the Pang Brothers overly reliant on jump scares, with little time spent on really working on the atmosphere of the piece. Small moments occasionally break this trend. A scene where Ling (Elanne Kwong) confronts Quan (Ka Tung Lam) over the disappearance of her friends stands out as a suitably tense encounter, as does a subsequent scene where a mobile phone's ringtone threatens to alert a demon to the presence of Ling, but such moments are rare. All too often, the brothers rely on the soundtrack to build the tension, before unleashing another jump scare. This isn't necessarily such a bad thing when done well, as is the case here, but the lack of a interesting story means the film tends to drag, and its effect is lessened with each repeat viewing.

The cast is fine, but much like the plotting of the film, their performances are too informed by what has come before in the J-Horror genre to offer anything exciting or new. Their...

A creepy Japanese horror movie that has a very interesting story to it that keeps you watching. Worth seeing. I say B-.
"If she's locked up there how could she show up in the restaurant." A group of friends on vacation in Thailand are ready for a relaxing time. When word gets out that rebels are attempting to over through the Prime Minister. On their way to the airport the get the news that it's closed. Being able to only find rooms in a motel that is utterly rundown they decide to wait it out. They soon realize that there is more to the hotel then thought. Having not seen a whole lot of Japanese horror movies (I have seen the re-makes) I wasn't 100% sure what to expect. While this movie did tend to drag a little, it was very creepy and did make me jump a few times. The quality of this is very good, not only is it creepy but there is also a story that keeps you intrigued the entire time. That is not something you can say about most American horror movies. Overall, a very interesting and creepy horror that will creep you out. I give it a B-.

Would I watch again? - I don't think so...

Phase 7 [HD]

The World is Ending... Got Ammo?
Coco (Daniel Hendler) and his pregnant wife Pipi (Jazmin Stuart) live in an apartment building in Argentina. They have a life pretty much like every one else. Coco is rather annoying in a lazy, have your wife do everything for you kind of way. They have the typical married couple spats. One day, they go grocery shopping together to stock up on groceries. While there, they see a huge rush of people running into the store to shop. One the way home, they see signs of chaos in the streets but they are more concerned with their petty bickering than what's really happening. They return to the building and their apartment unknowingly while the world around them falls apart. While making dinner, the phone rings and they're told to have one person go downstairs to the lobby.

When they arrive, they are told that the entire building has been quarantined because of a deadly virus that is sweeping the world. Men in hazmat suits outside the building inform them should stay in their...

Dark, but Entertaining...
Phase 7 is a survival/black comedy film. An epidemic has occurred and an apartment building is quarantined until further notice. Consequently, paranoia slowly begins to build and the tenants turn against each other. I really enjoyed Phase 7.

What did I like? The mixture of survival and dark comedy works well in this movie. I laughed plenty of times and it didn't try hard to be funny. The acting was fine, as well, and I really enjoyed the music. I personally thought it was shot very l well; particularly, I enjoyed the scene where they have a shootout at the parking garage and they only have a green glow stick to illuminate their target. By the way, although it may sound similar because of the different summaries floating around, this movie is not similar to [Rec]; they are both in Spanish and take place in apartment buildings, but those are the only similarities, in case you're wondering.

What did I dislike? The pace started to slow down towards the end, which...

Not a bad film
Phase 7 is not a horror film but what would happen if an outbreak was to happen outside and you have to stay in an apartment complex where you live and what the residents would do to each other to survive. Definitely worth checking out.

Busting

always love watching him
it was a good one he is funny and the movie was a good comedy action always love watching Robert Blake

a necessary look at America for our times
This film was one of a series of very good late 60's and 70's pictures I saw in South America at a movie-club over the course of several years. I then resaw Busting on an independent tv channel in 1982. It says a lot about corruption at the public and private levels and ends with Gould's throwing away his badge in a gesture of disgust. This is a hard look at a country already with problems in the 70's and in deep trouble now in political and economic terms with the nation deeply divided and no clear consensus for remedial action. The scene at the gay bar where the two detectives decide to dance together elicited a curious reaction from the viewers in Uruguay-a mixture of disbelief and nervous amusement. I also laughed, perhaps too loudly, but at the end, I was "not amused". See this within the context of Welcome Home, Soldier Boys, Brewster McCloud, Hail, The Great Texas Dynamite Chase, The Gypsy Moths, The Great White Hope, Easy Rider and many more from a time when movies were not...

Ghetto Physics

GHETTO PHYSICS: A Metaphysical Documentary With A Social Conscience
GHETTO PHYSICS!!!! What happens when What The Bleep meets Martin Luther King Jr.? A metaphysical tour de force documentary is born. The documentary Ghetto Physics met every expectation I had hoped. As a spiritual leader of a socially aware religious community, E.Raymond Brown's movie brought the esoteric concepts in metaphysics to earth, by revealing how the PIMP/HO archetype expresses itself not just on the ghetto streets of America where its most familiar but also it extended the archetype to show its manifestation in geo politics, religion and Wall street. In fact, Ghetto Physics forces you to meet the pimp/ho in your own being. This was most difficult for many who watched this documentary with me.

KRS-One and Ice-T analysis of the pimp/ho energy that moves our society was deeply effective. What was even more appreciative was John Perkins, of Economic Hitman fame and Hank Wesselman whose work with various shamans added universal understanding of this archetype and how...

all too true but....
This video is from some of the same people who made What the Bleep do I Know? , which was exciting and uplifting, and based upon implications of some of the discoveries in quantum physics. I was pulling for this video to perform some similar magic. Sadly, while choosing to frame the subject of control and power exchange in our society as pimps and ho's wasn't inaccurate, it was depressing. I can't see myself wanting to watch it again, unlike the many times I enjoyed What the Bleep! I even bought the extended version of WTB called Down the Rabbit Hole and watched that version multiple times. So when I tell you how regretful I am that this video flopped you can see that I'm a member of the choir who is saying that, and its not just the voice of a traditional foe of all that is not traditional thought. (You know those reviews. They are always one or two star ratings of ,mostly, scathing anger that any thought outside of the main stream dares to exist in their world.)

The humor...

racous documentary
GhettoPhysics is a raucous documentary DVD from William Arntz -- who is the co-creator of What the Bleep Do We Know?! -- on life as we have collectively created it. The film shows the possibility of creating a new paradigm -- that we don't have to settle for the dog-eat-dog society we've always known. GhettoPhysics holds that each person must take responsibility for changing the phenomenon of "pimps and hos," because pimps and hos do not exist only in the ghetto, as many of us would like to believe, but they also envelope our whole system of commerce. The film examines the interplay between power players and their foot soldiers and how that dynamic is the simplest expression of how power is wielded in the world. Even in the spiritual community there are bona fide pimps and hos -- we cannot hide from this timeless game of power even though it may make us uncomfortable in our ever-so-clean skin. GhettoPhysics can hit every one of us where we are sure to feel it -- physically,...

Christmas Lodge [HD]

CHRISTIAN ** FAMILY ** FAITH ** GIVING
It's definitely a Christian script. But then, Christmas is based on Christ--His birth. So a strong Christian emphasis is natural. There will be those that cry "Religion" or Preachy" and they are correct. Preaching faith is what Christ's life was about. No violent action here, but instead a family film with a positive message.

Not being a huge fan of Thomas Kinkade, my wife suggested we buy and view this film. Now I'm glad. The Kinkade connection is from one of his paintings. So here we have a G-rated; cozy romance being a result of fate; a save the lodge campaign where its past aligns with its future; it is hope-faith-dreams coming true; through generations of family.

Cast is lead by Mary (Erin Karpluk-TVs "Being Erica") who decides to take the lodge by the horns to save it. Jack (Michael Shanks-TVs "Stargate") is the lodge builders' ancestor trying to keep it alive. Mary's sis Cathie is Victoria Banks, a 1st time acting role, but she also writes and sings 2...

Christmas Family Fare
Mary lives and works in the city, but she is renewed by the times she can escape to the mountains. On a weekend getaway to the mountains with her boyfriend it becomes apparent that the mountains are not his idea of a good time. He wants to hang at the lodge where they are staying and she wants to get out in the fresh air and hike. As they are hiking they come across an injured little girl and her dog. They carry her back to her home, which it turns out is an old lodge where Mary's family had spent the Christmas holidays for years in her young life, until her Grandma died. After that her Grandpa couldn't bear to go back. It has now fallen into disrepair, but Jack, the injured girl's father, is trying to restore it to it's former function as a rustic guest lodge. Just so happens that Mary works in the field of historic restoration and her father and brothers have a construction company. Mary formulates a plan to help get the lodge in shape so that she can bring her family , including...

I really wanted to like this movie, but...
Summary: Mary is a workaholic in the city who is drawn to the mountains where she grew up. During a weekend visit, she rediscovers The Christmas Lodge where she spent many Christmases with her family growing up. The place has now become run-down, and it is Mary's wish to help restore it to its former glory. In the process, she discovers that God has a very special plan for her life.

This is definitely a faith and family movie. There should be more of this type genre as it has a willing audience. I really wanted to like this movie, but I couldn't seem to "get over" some of its glaring faults. First, Mary's mother is far older than her father, and even, elderly. In fact, she would be much better paired with the grandfather. Mary's father is only middle-aged. I couldn't get past that. It bothered me! Her mother, along with Mary's brothers and sister, were so underdeveloped that the movie fell flat. Mary's mother had too little to say in her interactions and seemed...

Craft in America Set

An overwhelming feast of creative work and people!
What an exceptional series! My daughter, who teaches art, encouraged us to purchase this series of programs because she was deeply inspired by watching one of the programs, so we gave it a try. Wow! What an adventure, visiting amazing, inspiring people from all across the country, and feasting on the rich diversity of gorgeous, works of crafted art! You meet delightful, funny, earthy, courageous people of many different "types" who share their lives and works. You see them doing their work, gathering in communities, struggling to find their way through life... and bearing the mosts beautiful, diverse works! The quality of the creations makes it harder to discern art from craft. But the best part is just delighting in story after story of amazing people, the moving accounts of their life journeys, to communities that sustain them, and their awesome works of art! Another delight is the photography of the people and the environments from which their works arise. The filming and...

Extremely well done and inspiring
This series came as a wonderful surprise; I had never heard of it and had low expectations. But the consistent high quality of the interviews and the visuals, and the enormous diversity of the featured artists, makes it a stand-out in the art documentary genre. It emphasizes each artist's sense of place, as well as illustrating the way creative traditions are fused with culture and passed down over generations. A must-see for anyone interested in the creative process.

Inspiring, educational fascinating look at artist craftspeople
This 3 hour dvd is a wonderful glimpse into skilled artisan/craftspeople that shows their studios, their inspirations, motivations, and technique. Not a "how to" at all, but a "why and how and who". HIGHLY recommend!

Don't Worry, We'll Think Of A Title

Unwatchable
When I recently heard of this film I thought I would like it a lot. It has plenty of mid-60's television comic celebrities in it, and I guess I was expecting the same quality of humor as you would find on the Dick Van Dyke show. But it's just cheap gags that just feel old over and over and over. I think I might have liked this movie when I was six or seven, it's just that type of humor. It's on Netflix now (and probably many other services) so if possible check it out online before you buy.

A high quality print of a slapstick movie
I caught the last 5 minutes of this movie on TV one night, so I looked it up and found it was available. I immediately ordered it! I watched it and was enthralled with all of the cameos, and Moe Howard playing a straight part! Hilarious!
I asked a friend "when you watched the Dick Van Dyke Show, who were your favorite characters?" (I already knew who mine were, of course...) She replied: "Buddy and Sally!"
After the movie finished, she said "they could have called it the Buddy and Sally show!" :D

I'm glad to own a copy of this rare gem. I believe these are made to order because I was notified that there would be a delay, but it arrived within a week of that email. Trustworthy seller.

You'll love it - or hate it.
If you didn't love the Dick Van Dyke show, you won't like this either. But if you DID love the Dick Van Dyke show, you might still not like this film. But then again, you might really enjoy it!

Think of all the corny jokes Buddy Sorrell and Sally Rogers came up with - and Rob Petrie tossed, then think of all the jokes they DIDN'T say. Then you've got this film.

This movie features Buddy, Sally, and even Mel Cooley - scratch that, I should say this movie features Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, and Richard Deacon (the actors that portrayed Buddy, Sally, and Mel in The Dick Van Dyke show) in an almost plotless collection of gags and jokes. It also features some rather unexpected cameos you have to watch out for.

It does NOT include Dick Van Dyke or Mary Tyler Moore, but maybe the script was too corny for them!

If you LOVE Buddy (Morey), you owe it to yourself to see this film.

Occupant [HD]

May Be Deeper Than You Think
If you watch this with a wait and see attitude and don't expect a typical horror film , you may like it. Lots of discussion on whether there was possession or insanity. The movie definitely provides an opportunity to have a discussion about what was actually going on. I personally think it was both. He had to be a bit unhinged to start. And a lot at the end. But people don't lose it that quickly if they are starting out normal. I also think due to several things that there was possession or influence of an evil nature. This isn't a wild ride kind of movie. It is more of a deeper type of "horror" movie. One that leaves you to wonder. Watch it with friends who don't mind a more mellow movie and are ready for discussion when it ends.

What exactly happened here?
There are possible spoilers ahead, but I'm not sure it would really matter because upon finishing this film, you won't have any idea what happened anyway... When this film started, I thought it might be your run-of-the-mill supernatural events story. Boy was I wrong. There was nothing run-of-the-mill about this thing. I have no idea what really happened here. We're led to believe that maybe Danny's grandmother died because of something other than natural causes, but we're never given any indication of what that might be. She lived in this apartment for many years without the ill-effects that seem to drive her grandson mad after only a couple of days. What's up with the creepy doorman? Who is the elderly black man he finds in his apartment? What's going on with the shoes? Do all the drawings on the wall mean something? What's with the hole in the wall? Why did Danny, apparently, murder a girl after only a couple of days in the apartment? Was he just mentally weak or did he...

An Engrossing Descent into Madness
We are not sure of the source of the maddening of the young man forced to stay in his New York apartment. Are some internal propensities working themselves out in the claustrophobia of his situation? Is this a masculine version of Roman Polanski's Repulsion in which Catherine Deneuve's character succumbs to a terrifying insanity within the confines of her apartment? Or is this more like "The Exorcist" in which some outside malevolence is relentlessly attacking its target? Or is it a little of both?

The movie apparently intends to slant our interpretation in one particular way. This shows in its final scenes, but also in little clues planted along the way. What's that behind the would-be girlfriend as she stands in the middle of the room after getting something from the refrigerator? You see it in just the briefest flash.

Either way, it's true that there are aspects of this movie that make for...

Road to World War II

A Long Awaited Documentary
Even though the title of this set is "The Road to World War II", going by the description and titles of the episodes given, this is actually a documentary series that was called Between The Wars that aired on TV during the 1970s with Eric Sevareid as host. If this is the case, this is a long over-due series that is finally coming to DVD. The series does a fairly good job of chronicling the world events during the 20 years of so-called "peace" that started with the end of World War 1 and the beginning of World War 2. While this is not an exhaustive series on the subject, it does provide good information for those who have an interest in this time period.

WW II
To those of us who grew up hearing Eric Sevareid as the chief CBS news man, and seeing his comments on the world, the history of the War, and American character, this is a treat. His steady delivery and tone of voice make this a joy to listen to and learn from. Well worth the price.

Top-Notch Documentary
Narrated by Eric Sevareid, this well written and produced series covers the inter-war years, and does a very good job of it, too. No fluff and no 'History Channelesque' dramatics. Sadly, the series presents little information regarding the rise of fascism in the countries (except Italy) that became Germany's client states during World War II. However, this missing coverage does not detract from a most interesting and informative view of the world between the world wars.
